What Is No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu?

No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practiced without the traditional uniform (Gi). Instead of gripping the kimono, athletes use body control, underhooks, overhooks, and wrestling-style techniques. It's faster-paced, more dynamic, and directly applicable to MMA and real-world self-defense.

  • Grappling without the Gi — rash guard and shorts only
  • Emphasis on body control, takedowns, and scrambles
  • Directly applicable to MMA and real-world self-defense
  • Youth No-Gi/Wrestling: Tuesdays & Thursdays at 6:00 PM
  • Builds on fundamentals from Gi training for a complete grappling game
  • Open to ages 6+ with separate youth and adult training

No-Gi vs Gi: Which Is Right for You?

Both Gi and No-Gi training develop essential grappling skills, but they emphasize different aspects. Gi training teaches patience, grip fighting, and precision. No-Gi training develops speed, athleticism, and body awareness. Most serious grapplers train both. At Flow Academy, we offer both styles so you can develop a complete game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Gi experience before trying No-Gi?

No. While many students train both, you can start with No-Gi if that's your preference. Our coaches will teach you the fundamentals regardless of your background.

What do I wear for No-Gi class?

A rash guard (or fitted athletic shirt) and grappling shorts or athletic shorts without pockets or zippers. No shoes are worn on the mat.

Is No-Gi good for self-defense?

Yes. No-Gi techniques are highly applicable to real-world self-defense since attackers won't be wearing a Gi. The emphasis on body control and takedowns translates directly to practical situations.
